Théophile Steinlen

1859-1923
Lausanne, Switzerland

Art Nouveau painter.
Originally trained as a designer for a textile mill, he was convinced by a friend to move to Paris to be with the "real artists". There, he met a few people, and was introduced to Le Chat Noir: a french cabaret. He became a regular in that crowd, befriending the owner, who commissioned him to make posters for the cabaret's upcoming events. The poster shown below is one of the posters for Le Chat Noir. It's also one of his most famous artworks. He created posters and illustrations for a few other advertising companies and some controversial magazines, and he also painted a few cats and landscapes until his death in Paris.
