Reine de Joie par Victor Joze

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
1892

This was a poster to advertise a book that came out around this time. It's one of his least provocative posters, yet, the use of the color red, anyone could figure it our at the time, referred back to the Moulin Rouge or the Red Light district. We could probably assume the model used for the picture was found there too.

  • If you look at this poster, what tells you it's advertising a book?
  • Can you tell just by looking at the image what kind of story it is about? Can you figure it out, or would you get a better idea by actually reading the book?
  • Sometimes, the point of a poster is to spark curiosity in the viewer's mind so that they want to find out more. How did the artist do that?
