Hannah Hoch

1889-1978
Gotha, Germany

Dada collage artist.
She always studied in the design arts, having to suspend her schooling to work with the Red Cross during the First World War, but continuing afterward. For a while, she worked as a clothes designer for a few feminine magazines. This and a few other incidents turned her into a feminist. She used another famous artist, Raoul Hausmann to become famous on her own, after having an affair with him, but his abusive nature and his conviction in male superiority inspired Hannah Hoch to become even more radical in her feminist ideas. Her works are witness to the gender war of the period. However, in Germany, Hoch was forced to lay low during the Second World War, still producing works and exhibiting them, but without being openly activist.
