Alphonse Mucha

 1860-1939
Czech Republic (pronounced check republic)

Art Nouveau painter.
He sang professionally at first but had always wanted to draw instead, so he gave up singing and went on to paint theatrical scenery, getting a job with a theater company in Vienna. When the theater there burned down, he went back home to become a freelance artist. He was quickly hired by a count to decorate his castle. The count was so amazed that he payed Mucha to go to the Academy of Fine Arts. Mucha then moved to Paris to continue his education and started to work as an illustrator for magazines and advertising.

Look at the poster ads for cookies and champagne below. Mucha is also famous for his Job ads (a cigarette company), and a series depicting the history of the Czech people called the Slav Epic.

Here, we focus on his advertisements, but if you're interested in finding out more about this guy, what he did, and why his work was considered controversial, check out his page on Wikipedia.
