African-American collage artist, painter and author.
He went to New York University (NYU) to study cartooning and art editing. He served in the US army during World War II and came back a changed man. His art changed as well as his vision of life.
THe focus of his collages was on people: the crowd, the everyday activities, jazz bands and concerts, civil rights. His paintings were more abstract, especially near the end of his life.
