Naked

Guerrilla Girls
2004

Know that there is a definite difference between naked and a nude. Look them up on dictionary.com. Basically, the first defines specifically someone without clothes (bare), and the second has a connotation more related to posing for the goodness of art.

This poster makes fun of a very famous painting by an old master Called "La Grande Odalisque" painted by Ingres in 1814. It became famous for its' view of women as exotic collectibles (Odalisque refers to a Turkish harem- a place where polygamous men kept their wives).

  • Look at the similarities between both: how can we tell the Guerrilla Girls based their billboard add on this painting and not another reclining nude?
  • In what way does the image help us interpret the message on the billboard?
  • What is the message trying to tell us?
  • If you were driving or taking the bus to school one day and you saw this billboard advertised in the street, what would you think? Is this art? Would you be offended?
