Hommage à Rosa Luxembourg

Jean Paul Riopelle
1992
Stencil

This artwork is HUGE, about twice the height of a regular person, and really, really, really, long. If you're ever in Quebec city, you can look at it at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec in the permanent collection.
This work, as the title suggests, is an homage to Rosa Luxemburg, a famous Polish advocate for peace during the first World War, deep into politics and marxist philosophy. This artwork was actually created by Riopelle for his own wife, Joan Mitchell (an American artist), who reminded him a lot of Rosa Luxemburg in her admirable strength of character. When Joan Mitchell died, Riopelle was devastated and dealt with the pain of her loss by creating this art piece.

Look at the artwork and its details:
  • What objects did he use as stencils?
  • How long do you think it took him to finish the work? What does that say about his love for her?
  • Do you think making art can be an effective outlet for strong emotions?
